Internet Forum Etiquette Regarding Birthdays (yours and theirs)

Almost every forum site has a birthday listing on the bottom. This section reads where you entered your birth date on your profile. If you’re like me, you made up everything in your profile, so your birthday will be incorrect.

When your birthday is listed in the birthday section, DO NOT draw attention to it in any post. Even if your parents bought you a great camera for your BIRTHDAY or you got a bunch of automated happy BIRTHDAY letters from forum sites, you must NEVER start your own birthday thread (please see below for what to do if your birthday did not merit a post).

When someone posts a birthday thread for you, it is common manners that dictate that you not reply to the birthday thread until 10 people have wished you well. Birthday threads are never to be jacked…not even by French Canadians. If 10 people do not reply to the thread and it sinks to the bottom, consider yourself a loser and a dork and you will never have any success in life.

What to do when it’s somebody else’s birthday:

Don’t post a birthday thread unless you know the person (by “know”, I mean have posted to at least two of their threads and have agreed at one time on any subject). Many sites have an official "greeter" that will almost definitely wish everyone a happy birthday. We call these people "A$$-kissing busy-bodies".

Once a birthday thread has been posted, feel free to wish them well. Be aware, however, that the earlier you post in the thread, the better chances you’ll be able to have your post read as somewhat original. By the end of the thread, it’s like being the last one in your office to sign the boss’ card. It’s easier to just sign it than to write something that hasn’t been used yet.

If your birthday passes and no one posted a birthday thread, then you have one week to post an “I hope this makes you feel guilty” thread where you point out that your birthday was missed. Please bear in mind, however, that this may also point out the fact that you have no friends. Not even an A$$-kissing busy-body.
