Some work will require physical strength that may be beyond your ability to perform.
This maintenance item was successfully completed on a 1998 1.8T AEB with 5speed manual transmission. Tiptronic transmissions do not apply to this write-up.
Tools needed:
-1/2" drive breaker bar/wrench
-1/2" drive 17mm Allen socket
-1/2" drive 16mm triple square Torx bit
-Torque wrench (not necessary)
-Flathead screwdriver
-Philips head screwdriver
-4' hose
-Oil funnel
-Oil pan
-Plenty of old rags
-3qrts MT-90 gear oil
| 1. | Place car on level, sturdy ground and use ramps, or stands and jacks to raise from of vehicle off of the ground. Set emergency brake and wheel chocks or bricks. Pop hood a a moderate temperature. |
| 2. | Once engine and transmission is cool to the touch, remove belly pan and remove coolant tank. Remove 3 Philips head screws and set the tank to the side, with all coolant lines still in tact. |
| 3. | Use the 17mm Allen socket, and the breaker bar and loosen the hex nut located on the top, driver's side of the transmission. Do not drop, or mar the threads on this fill screw. Once removed, insert the 4' hose, and funnel to the top part of the hose and insert into the fill hole. Watch for any small drips of oil. |
| 4. | Next, set up your 16mm Torx bit, and oil pan. Loosen the Torx drain plug with the breaker bar and bit. Once loose, remove the plug. Be careful not to spill any oil on your arm, as the oil could still be warm to the touch. Let oil drain until slight, to no dripping and replace drain plug. Tighten to 25' lb. Trq. |
| 5. | Next, take the oil and slightly shake it up so all of the distillates are incorporated in with the gear oil. P funnel and make sure that the hose doesnât come out of the fill hole. Repeat process until you have used about 2.85 quarts of the gear oil. Once all drained from the bottles, replace oil fill plug and tighten to 25' lb. Trq. |
| 6. | Remove all items from under the hood, and start car. While car is running, depress clutch and get the gears rolling and shift the car from each gear while clutch is depressed. If the transmission is still slightly grainy, you may add slightly more oil. |
| 7. | Take car for test-drive and enjoy. |
