When I was in high school, I took a ride in my friend's MKII GTi and instantly fell in love. From that day on, I vowed to myself that I would own a VW. It wasn't until February 2003 that I was able to fulfill my vow. She was a just a plain old 1999 Passat with a bit over 24,000 miles on her. Everything about her was perfect. He V6 engine purred smoothly and helped propel her quickly through her manual transmission. But as a car enthusiast, I wanted more. So began my journey of mods that would transform my car into what it is today.
As a VW noob, I needed some ideas and technical know-how to help me start off in the right direction. I tried to learn as much as I could from the Internet and found it in various VW/Audi related websites such as ClubB5 (PassatWorld), VWVortex, AudiWorld, and B5one. I loved how all these modified Passats looked with their "OEM+" style and understated, yet tasteful modifications. While interacting on the forums, I not only got some great ideas for my Passat, I made a lot of friends who shared the same passion as I.
My first mod happened at my first GTG. It occurred in Brooklyn during BBB1 when Larry (Flippped) sold me his old set of clear corners. I was ecstatic! My car was no longer stock! It was on that day that the mod bug bit me and bit me hard. My journey had begun, but my funds were limited, so I had to mod slowly.
Because my modding budget has always been limited, I knew I had to choose my mods carefully. In addition to my clear corners, I have installed a "shorty" antenna, a Kamei grille, Neuspeed springs, Koni SofSport shocks, a GIAC chip, PBR Axxis pads, slotted rotors, and Audi 17" rims. I think I can honestly say that I am happy with the way she now looks, drives, and handles.
Having my Passat has got to be the most fun I have ever had with owning a car. I not only have fun driving it, but I have also enjoyed the comradery among my fellow Passat enthusiasts I have met over the years. Every time we get together, it has always been a great time. I have learned so much from them and hopefully I can pass that knowledge down to the new batch of Passat owners that will come. Finally, I would like to thank Bryan, the moderators, and everyone at the B5one community for this special honor. You have all made me feel at home and I look forward to making a positive contribution to B5one.
